4:28 pm - Nokia 9300i problems

thekumquat
Hello. I got a Nokia 9300i (new version of the 9500) about a month ago and I'm having lots of problems setting it up. The manual is useless ("To send a message, click Send Message"... and nothing about "If your message doesn't send, try XYZ..."), as is my phone provider, so before taking time off work to visit the engineers I thought I'd try the power of LJ, and found this community.

My problems:
1. Getting numbers off my old phone (Nokia 6310) onto the new one. I backed up the old phone previously onto my WinXP machine, and transferred the SIM card. However if I try putting the backup from the PC onto the new phone it says "This is a different phone" - duh! The new Nokia smartsuite software isn't compatible with the old phone and the old software not with the new one, I think.
2. The sim contacts appear if I look through my address book (via the outside of the phone or via the inside), BUT if I get a text or call, it won't display their name. If I write a text on the numberpad it will then let me look up a name to send it to, but if I type it on the inside and enter a name to send the message to, it says the name doesn't exist. If I enter the number, use it and save it as their name, the next time I try it complains there are multiple entries with the same name. Help???

3. Interactive buttons on webpages don't work and apparently I need to turn on/off Javascript. How? Should I download an LJ client and if so which one?
4. Ability to send emails - is it not possible to send a text message to someone else's email account, or do I have to set up my own email? If so, what settings do I need to provide apart from POP3 and SMTP details?
5. Allegedly the Document program is compatible with MS Office, but when I sent files I'd written on the phone to my PC and opened them in Word, the formatting is screwed. If I open them as a text only file I at least find the text but returns are replaced by garbage. Help?

Finally, the sodding thing doesn't vibrate, which is crap for a business phone and even more so if you're deaf! Anyone know if you can still buy phone vibrating attachments anywhere?

Sorry for the long post - all advice gratefully received before I go back to my old phone and only use this one for typing on...

6:08 pm - Opera Mini

stevek
Have downloaded opera mini to teh phone and am now attempting to make my first LJ post using it.

*Fingers crossed* I'm not making a balls up of it!

Edit

Took a little getting used to, but the good news is it's worked! Thanks for the suggestion.

2:24 pm - Browser Query

stevek
Whilst speaking to sparklielizard on Saturday night, she confirmed that the Nokia's web browser can be problematic when pressing certain buttons on webpages (I cited the "Update Button" on LJ, as an example).

She recommended Reqviewer, which I think I've used as on trial basis sometime ago; however, unless I'm being a complete muppet I can no longer find it on handango.com. But whilst thumbing round teh interweb it would appear Reqviewer is now Req Wireless, which sadly is no longer available!

My question is simple, are there any recommendations for an alternative browser that isn't quite so tempramental?

Nokia Announces the 9300i

Now it has wifi, is the 9300i exactly the same as the 9500, just smaller and without a camera then? Or is anything else improved on it?

4:21 pm - Livejournal + Opera

stevenothing
It would seem that LJ have fixed their bug/feature which prevented the version of Opera that comes with the 9500 from viewing livejournal (at least, from viewing it with cookies turned on). Typical that I only find this out after setting up a proxy to strip out the headers it doesn't like.

Still, at least now I have a nice anonymous proxy with which to post to LJ.

Whilst killing time trawling through Wikipedia, I wondered if it had an entry for the 9500. It does, but I suspect the person who wrote the article wasn't *that* impressed with the phone. ;-)

Article here.

Anyone tired this PowerNavigation? Any idea if it is any good, or is there something better out there that you know of?

I am currently planning a trip across Dartmoor. I need something that will give me location info and maps on my 9500, but without having to plug it into anything else. Any suggestions?

9:25 am - Question

stevek
I was trying to send a fax via teh phone, but kept getting an error message: System: Operation is not supported. (Not that I'll be using it too often, but it's nice to have all the functions working).

Any ideas why this should be? Do I need to contact Orange to get the fax set up?

11:39 pm - Nokia 9500 and Linux

stevenothing
Have recently managed to get this thing working quite nicely with my linux machine, so thought I'd post a few notes on how I did it, for anyone else who's interested. This is all with a Debian slant, so other distros may vary.

of interest only to linux users, no doubtCollapse )

Seems that livejournal crashes when you send it a blank cookie:

$ telnet www.livejournal.com 80
Trying 66.150.15.150...
Connected to livejournal.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: www.livejournal.com
Cookie:

Connection closed by foreign host.

Opera on the 9500 seems to be sending a blank Cookie2: header along with all its requests, and as such livejournal isn't working at all.

[update]
This seems to be a problem with Opera, too. As soon as you set a cookie in Opera, it will return a Cookie: and a Cookie2: header along with every request it makes to that server. And to add to that, even when you use Set-Cookie2:, Opera still returns the cookie you set in a Cookie header, not a Cookie2 header.
Brokenness on all sides, really.

11:07 pm - Now you can MSN, ICQ, AIM, and YAHOO

kgoth
The Agile program is now available for the 9500 from here. I have downloaded it, installed it, and tested it. Guess what, it works really well.

I now have MSN, AIM, ICQ, and YAHOO messaging via my mobile :-)

Give it a try...

12:39 pm - Firmware Upgrade

stevek
Reading another 9500 forum, there's talk of firmware upgrades from v4.44 to v4.50, although this has to be done by specialists.

Apparantly, it can make the phone up to 10% faster between applications. I'm debating whether to give in and get the updates done - any of you running v4.50 yet or thinking of doing this upgrade?

I really do need an icon for teh phone posts!
